Day 1: In the Lap of Modernity
As the plane touched down at Chandigarh Airport, I couldn’t help but feel a rush of excitement. Chandigarh, often called “The City Beautiful,” was going to be my home for the next two days. With its unique blend of modernity and natural beauty, I knew this was going to be an unforgettable journey.
Morning:
After checking into the hotel, we kicked off my Chandigarh adventure with a hearty breakfast at a local eatery. I couldn’t resist trying the famous Amritsari Kulcha, a delicious stuffed bread, with a side of spicy chole (chickpea curry). The explosion of flavors was a perfect start to my day.
Rock Garden: Where Art Meets Nature
First on the itinerary was the iconic Rock Garden, created by the visionary artist Nek Chand. This expansive sculpture garden is a testament to human creativity and nature’s beauty. It’s a maze of winding paths, terracotta sculptures, and whimsical installations made from discarded materials.

As I wandered through the garden, I felt like I had entered a fairy tale world. I marveled at the waterfall, sculptures of musicians, and the amphitheater. Every nook and cranny held surprises, and we spent hours exploring this enchanting wonderland.
Gandhi Bhavan & Punjab University
Then, we visited the Gandhi Bhavan situated within the lush campus of Punjab University. This peaceful spot is dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi. It houses an impressive collection of his photographs, letters, and other memorabilia. It’s a serene place to start your day, offering insight into the life and teachings of the Father of the Nation.

Afternoon:
After a morning of artistic immersion, I headed to a local Punjabi dhaba (roadside eatery) for some authentic Punjabi cuisine. The buttery naan and creamy dal makhani were to die for.
Chandigarh College of Architecture
As the sun began to set, I decided to visit the Chandigarh College of Architecture. Even if you’re not an architecture enthusiast, the innovative designs, and the serene campus are worth a visit. I found myself inspired by the architectural marvels Chandigarh has to offer.

Sukhna Lake: A Serene Oasis
To burn off the delicious calories, we made our way to Sukhna Lake. This man-made lake is a serene oasis right in the heart of the city. People come here for morning jogs, picnics, and to simply soak in the tranquility. We rented a paddleboat and lazily floated on the glistening waters, taking in the view of the Shivalik Hills in the distance.

Not too far away is the Le Corbusier Center, a tribute to the city’s visionary architect. It’s a fascinating place to learn about the man behind Chandigarh’s unique urban design. The center showcases his work, sketches, and his vision for a modern city.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, the lake area transformed into a lively hub with street food vendors and live music performances. I grabbed a cup of chai (Indian tea) and joined the locals in their evening rituals.
Day 2: A Glimpse of Le Corbusier’s Vision
Morning:
I started my second day with a visit to the Capitol Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site designed by the legendary architect Le Corbusier. The complex includes the Secretariat, High Court, and Legislative Assembly, each a marvel of modernist architecture. The Open Hand Monument, an emblem of Chandigarh, stands tall, symbolizing “the hand to give and the hand to take.”
Guided tours are available for those interested in the history and architectural significance of these structures. It was fascinating to learn about Le Corbusier’s vision for the city and how he integrated functionality with aesthetics.

Nek Chand’s Legacy: The Government Museum and Art Gallery
Next on my list was the Government Museum and Art Gallery, which houses an impressive collection of art and artifacts. It’s not just the exhibits that are captivating; the museum building itself is a work of art. I admired paintings by famous Indian artists and explored historical artifacts, feeling like I was on a journey through time.

Afternoon:
No trip to Chandigarh would be complete without savoring a traditional Punjabi thali for lunch. The flavorsome spread of curries, rotis, rice, and sweet treats left me both stuffed and satisfied.
Rose Garden: A Riot of Colors
The afternoon was dedicated to the Rose Garden, Asia’s largest rose garden, with over 1,600 varieties of roses. The fragrance and colors were simply mesmerizing. I strolled through the well-manicured lawns, stopping to smell the roses (literally) and taking countless pictures of these natural beauties.
Shopping Extravaganza at Sector 17
Evening descended, and I headed to Sector 17, the city’s main shopping and commercial center. This bustling sector is a shopaholic’s paradise, offering everything from designer boutiques to street-side stalls. I picked up souvenirs, handicrafts, and some stylish apparel, all while savoring street food like golgappas and tikkis (potato patties).
Night:
For my final dinner in Chandigarh, I opted for a rooftop restaurant with a view of the city’s illuminated skyline. As I dined on scrumptious tandoori dishes, I reflected on the incredible experiences I’d had in Chandigarh.
Chandigarh, with its harmonious blend of art, architecture, and nature, had cast a spell on me. It was a city that celebrated both tradition and modernity, and I couldn’t have asked for a better two-day adventure. As I drifted off to sleep, I knew I would carry the memories of this journey with me forever.
Conclusion: A City of Art and Serenity
Chandigarh, “The City Beautiful,” had indeed lived up to its name. In just 48 hours, I had explored its artistic side at the Rock Garden, marveled at its modernist architecture, immersed myself in nature at Sukhna Lake, and indulged in delectable Punjabi cuisine. This city’s unique combination of culture, creativity, and calm had left an indelible mark on my heart.
As I boarded the plane back home, I couldn’t help but smile, knowing that I had uncovered the charm and chic of Chandigarh in just two days. It’s a city that invites you to slow down, appreciate the finer things in life, and savor every moment. Chandigarh, you will always have a special place in my travel diary.
