A Spontaneous Bond and a New Plan
Kasol itself was captivating. With its lush greenery, lively cafes, and the gentle hum of the Parvati River nearby, it felt like a paradise tucked away in the mountains. We arrived at our hostel, which had a relaxed, bohemian vibe, perfect for travelers looking to unwind. That night, over a casual game of cards and some lively conversation in the common room, we met three other travelers—each with their own stories, quirks, and a shared enthusiasm for adventure. It didn’t take long for us to bond, and soon, we were planning the Kheerganga trek together.

The plan was to start at 10 am the next morning. The route to Kheerganga, though famous, was notorious for its unpredictable weather and tricky trails, especially the forest path, which we all unanimously agreed would be thrilling. We aimed to reach the top by 6 pm, just in time to witness the sunset over the mountains and to secure a tent for the night. But, as travel often teaches you, things rarely go as planned.
The morning seemed to be conspiring against us. From delayed breakfasts to endless packing, we somehow managed to push our start time all the way to 1 pm. To make matters worse, we couldn’t find a guide who was free at that hour. We debated whether to hire one later but, confident in our collective sense of direction, decided to navigate the trail on our own.

Into the Forest: Beauty Meets the Beast
Our chosen path was the “difficult” forest route, which was rumored to offer breathtaking views of waterfalls and dense forests but came with steep slopes, slippery stones, and countless twists. Stepping into the forest felt like entering another world—giant trees towered over us, streams of water trickled beside the path, and patches of sunlight filtered through the canopy. But the enchantment of the scenery was paired with the reality of a challenging trail. The incline was relentless, the air grew thinner, and our backpacks seemed to get heavier with every step.

Nightfall in the Wild
Around 4 pm, the forest began to thicken, and the light started fading, casting eerie shadows around us. We hadn’t anticipated nightfall creeping up so quickly, and soon, we were walking in near-darkness. Turning on our flashlights, the world around us transformed—our beams of light caught glimpses of mysterious silhouettes, while the sound of rustling leaves and the occasional hoot of an owl heightened our senses. Every step required caution; a single misstep could mean tumbling off the narrow trail.

The fear was real, but so was the thrill. We huddled closer, moving slowly, our lights guiding us through the pitch-black forest. Conversations dwindled as we focused on each step, our breaths visible in the cold, mountain air. Every now and then, the path would dip or climb steeply, and my heart would race, wondering if we were still on track. But as we pushed forward, our determination grew stronger. When we finally glimpsed a clearing ahead, we knew we were close to the top.
Reaching the Top: Stars Above, Campfires Below
By the time we reached the Kheerganga campsite, it was 8 pm. The scene was surreal—no city lights, no artificial sounds, just the vastness of the mountains around us, the star-studded sky above, and the comforting warmth of campfires flickering across the campsite. The stars seemed close enough to touch, like diamonds scattered on an endless black canvas. It felt as though we’d stepped into a realm untouched by time.
Since we hadn’t booked a tent, we wandered around the campsite, looking for the best spot. Luckily, we found a campsite that not only offered cozy tents but also served us a delicious hot meal—exactly what we needed after our ordeal. After dinner, we sat around a bonfire, warming ourselves as steam rose from our wet socks and shoes. The warmth of the fire seeped into our bones, washing away the cold and fatigue. We chatted, laughed, and exchanged stories under that clear, infinite sky, with shooting stars occasionally streaking across. It was one of those rare, perfect moments when everything in life feels right.
That night, I had the most peaceful sleep I’d ever experienced. Exhausted yet content, I drifted off, cradled by the sounds of nature and the knowledge that we’d made it to the top.

The next morning, we woke early to visit the famed Kheerganga hot springs. Soaking in the warm, natural water, with the chilly mountain air brushing against our skin, felt like a reward for our efforts. It was as though all the exhaustion melted away, replaced by a sense of calm and clarity. In that moment, surrounded by friends, with mountains standing watch around us, I felt a rare connection to nature and myself.
The Scenic Descent
The trek back was a stark contrast to our climb. This time, we chose the scenic village route, which was far gentler and blessed with breathtaking views of terraced fields, quaint cottages, and vibrant patches of wildflowers. The tranquility of the landscape was mesmerizing; every turn presented a new vista of the sprawling valley below. About halfway down, however, the skies darkened, and rain began to pour. With no shelter in sight, we huddled under trees briefly, trying to avoid the brunt of the downpour. But realizing that waiting could mean being stranded on slippery slopes, we decided to press on.

We ran through the rain, laughing and slipping, as the water drenched our clothes and faces. There was something liberating about running down a mountain trail in the rain, unburdened by worries, just living in the moment. Fortunately, the rain stopped after about 15 minutes, leaving the air fresh and the trail glistening under the soft light breaking through the clouds.
Back to Base: Pride, Exhaustion, and a Story to Tell
When we finally reached the base, it was a mix of relief and pride. We’d not only completed the trek but had done so through unexpected challenges. Looking back, it remains one of the most adventurous and demanding things I’ve ever done. And yet, every time I think of that trek—of the stars, the forest, the rain-soaked trail—I feel a thrill, a reminder of what I am capable of when I push past my fears.
This trek wasn’t just about reaching the top of Kheerganga; it was about testing my limits, finding joy in the unexpected, meeting the most supportive people and discovering a sense of peace and adventure in the heart of the mountains. It was a journey that will stay with me forever, a reminder of nature’s beauty, of friendship, and of the strength that lies within us all.
